The OASL was established by Article 267 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana and the Administrator of Stool Lands Act, 481 of 1994 to mobilize and disburse revenue from stool lands in the country.
On the 16th of October, 1996, the office became operational and it has since steadily increased its revenue generation from stool lands over the years. This revenue is a major source of funding for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) for development at the local level. Beneficiary traditional authorities have also used the revenues that accrue to them to spearhead developments in their respective areas which includes physical development and educational scholarships for the students under their jurisdiction amongst others.
This year, marks the 25th Anniversary of the establishment of the Office, and the Office intends to commemorate it. The theme for the occasion is; OASL @ 25 – Assessing the past, redefining the future of Customary Land Administration. As part of the celebration, the Office is holding a two (2) day stakeholders conference on topical issues involving the Lands Sector on Thursday 21st – 24th October, 2021.
